Project "GreenBeef" will contribute towards the production and commercialization of carbon neutral Angus beef in Portugal. The project will carry out experimentation and empirical calibration of models for soils, pastures, and animals in order to maximize carbon sequestration and minimize emissions.

Ruminants hidrogenate extensively the dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the rumen, producing meat and milk rich in saturated and trans fatty acids. Understanding and controling the rumen biohydrogenation process is key step. In this project, we are testing the hypothesis that rumen biohydrogenation is a colective microbial ecological response to enviromental stress like high rumen concentration of PUFA or tannins.

This project aims to innovate and optimize processes in the area of feeding and management practices of the Lusitano horse production, in order to promote: (i) the specialization of tasks and more effective production methods; (ii) the optimization of feeding resources; (iii) the improvement of the performance of the Lusitano horse allowing its competitiveness with other sport breeds.

PTDC/CVT/112054/2009 - NUTRIGENOV: Nutrigenetic modelling of dairy ewes from weaning to lambing. Impact upon ewes’ mammary gland development and dairy potential. PI: Rosário Marques (INIAV), Partners INIAV; CIISA/FMV/ULisboa, Funding FCT, 133.382 €. (2012-2015). 

Our objective is to investigate if different GH genotypes and restricted growing rates from weaning to lambing in ewes under grazing conditions modulates: intake and grazing behaviour, reproductive performance, metabolism from puberty to mid-lactation, mammary cell turnover and expression of GH gene and genes involved in GH regulation and GH-transduction signal during gestation and early lactation, and its impact in milk production and composition. We expect to identify genetic markers to be used in dairy ewes breeding strategies.

The objectives of this project are devolping pratical nutritional strategies for modulate the rumen biohydrogenation and thus modify the fatty acid composition of lamb meat. The effect of including in lamb´s dieat a local tanniferous bush (Cistus ladanifer) or replacing the cereals in the diet by citrus pulp, on rumen biohydrogenation and meat fatty acid composition are being evaluated.

A bilateral project between Univ. Federal da Paraiba (UFPB) and our Lab in order to study the milk goat production in the semiarid region of Brazil and deepen the scientific collaboration between the two research teams.
